The bible is not exactly a excellent moral guide - especially when it's about rasing kids.
His kids will be terrible people when they grow up - unless one or all of them decides not to accept blindly all the bullshit he says to them.
I always believed that respect should be earned - and about respect towards the parents shouldn't be different - the way to parents to gain respect from their children is not by threatening them. By doing so, the children will fear the parents but won't respect them. And since fear don't last forever - soon or later - these children will stand up and won't listen to them anymore.
